The Firehall Arts Centre's 6th Annual BC BUDS returns in
spring 2010 even bigger and better. The weekend of May 21st
till the 23rd will showcase work from theatre, dance, music
and interdisciplinary artists. This time around, the performances
will take place not just at the Firehall Arts Centre but
venues around the neighbourhood. As in past years, performances
will take place in the theatre and non-conventional settings
like offices, stairwells and basements.
BC BUDS allows established and emerging artists to present
new and experimental work while giving audiences an opportunity
to explore and experience the arts in informal and unorthodox
settings. All performances are FREE.

Vancouver artist, Mr. Fire-Man brings a display of unique
natural horns to the
walls of Ironworks Studio. Hand crafted from locally sourced
natural materials,
these trumpets represent an eight year sculptural/musical
exploration that began
in the woods of Roberts Creek and culminates with the orchestra
called the
Legion of Flying Monkeys.
Each horn is crafted for a specific purpose, whether for
playing into a
microphone on stage, or for ceremonial moments and parades.
Thus, some are
simple hardwood branches made hollow, while others are built
with complex bends
to accommodate mutes and tight spaces. Materials range from
hardwoods like
empress, elderberry and cherry to obscure plant forms like
the invasive giant
cow parsnip (an exceptional natural tube).
Mr. Fire-Man's band, the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn
Orchestra (LFM) performs
interactive shows for the Super Robertson Supper Show at
the Railway Club and
other local events. More than an orchestra, the LFM expects
the audience to
play along, sing, dance and willfully cross that barrier
between observer and
performer.
Please be invited for the opening night, Saturday June
19th, 2010 from 7 to 10
(with a performance from 8 to 8:45 by the LFM Horn Orchestra).
Entrance is free. Drinks available.
