Art show during Vancouver Jazz Festival

Paintings by Chris Blades and Wes Giesbrecht

Date: June 18-July 1 Medium: Paintings
Time: Daytime by appointment Paintings showing at evening concerts from June 20-29

In 1998 Wes Giesbrecht made his first mosaic wall hanging out of wood. Inspired by the venerable tradition of quilts and quilt-making, Wes used this as a template for some of his early wood mosaics. He no longer uses the quilt as a model but has moved on to more abstract designs. Wes has said "I'm constantly surprised by the new ideas that I want to explore. Where do these ideas come from? I really don't know, but it often seems as tho they come from somewhere outside of myself. My job is to pay attention when they come knocking."

"I'm not big on subtlety. My paintings tend to reach out and poke you in the eye."

While Wes has had considerable success on an international level as a wood artist, he found himself longing for a less rigid form and a less limited colour palette than that medium was affording him. Acrylic paint has been the answer.

Working in a unique style that includes using a specialized easel of his own devise, Wes has been able to bring bold, vividly colourful paintings to life that will enhance their environment with a powerful contemporary statement.
