Zoe Trio & Tom Wherrett’s Squareheart, Double CD Release Show
|
| Date: June

Somewhere on the outer fringes of Vancouver’s tightly knit jazz community lurk two groups
poised to unleash their latest creations upon an unsuspecting city. On Sunday June 21, Zoe Trio
and Tom Wherrett’s Squareheart will be celebrating the release of their new albums with a show
at the intimate Ironworks venue. Both guitar fronted groups offer unique takes on traditional jazz
and rock styles, and feature some of the city’s most in demand players.
“For the Community” is the debut album by Vancouver’s
Zoe Trio. The album is a dark, aggressive and intense
instrumental trip through funk, fusion, surf and dub
styles. Recorded by John Raham at Ogre studios, the
album documents the bands unique and tight
arrangements and interplay which have been finely
honed through years of experience at typically packed
weekly gigs at Vancouver’s Libra Room. The nine
original tracks composed by guitarist Alvaro Rojas
showcase the talents of bassist Cory Curtis, drummer
Sam Cartwright and quirky instrumental songwriting
featuring many a sonic freakout or psychedelic
soundscape. If the Band of Gypsies did the soundtrack to
a film noir about alien abduction, it might sound like this
album.
Tom Wherrett's first C.D. as a leader, self produced and self
titled, was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, at the culmination of a
two year period of playing, studying, and composing in New
York. The all original music on this recording was heavily
influenced by the Brooklyn underground jazz scene as well as
Wherrett's teachers, collaborators, and the last one hundred
years of music. The music showcases the guitarist's interest in
dark but catchy melodies, intense rhythmic interactions and
thoughtful improvisations. His writing often sits on the the
edge of jazz and rock music and tends to draw listeners in
wherever he plays. Vancouver is Wherrett's new home and
Squareheart is his new band, featuring some of Vancouver's
finest musicians. With Jillian Lebeck, Adam Thomas, and Joe
Poole - this is a band not to be missed.
