Hey jazz fans! The Joint is jumpin once again! A sure-to-be-memorable
night, the Great Classical Joint Reunion will bring Vancouver
musicians and fans together in a tribute to Vancouver's
legendary Classical Joint and to its longtime proprietor
Andreas Nothiger. The Joint, an intimate space
on Carrall Street that closed in 1990, was home to some
of the greatest musicians in the city for over 20 years.
The reunion will feature a rhythm section of Classical Joint
all-stars (including the great pianist Chris Sigerson, bassist
Ken Lister, guitarist Michael Guild, and drummer Craig Scott)
backing up a glittering array of players in a fantastic
jam session. The ever-growing list of special guests includes
the likes of Gavin Walker, Sal Ferreras, Alan Matheson,
Michael Dunn, Bruce Freedman, Joani Taylor, Tom Keenlyside,
Raphael Geronimo, Ron Samworth, Saul Berson, Marke Andrews,
and Coat Cooke. And look forward to appearances by legendary
Classical Joint bands like Oscar Nietos Flamenco Heresy.
There will be lots of familiar faces, some Joint memorabilia,
dark coffees, and much more. So let's get this
party started! Co-curated with Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Colleen
Savage, and Mariken van Nimwegan. Painting of the Classical
Joint is by Mariken van Nimwegen.

Darius Jones is an extraordinary young alto saxophonist
whose passionate and intense playing is all the rage in
New York City these days. Born in Virginia, the 31-year
old instrumentalist lets his soulful Southern roots shine
through on his impressive debut recording, Manish
Boy (A Raw and Beautiful Thing). A phenomenal debut,
raves All About Jazz. The Boston Globe rated the disc one
of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2009 while declaring that Darius
plays both raucously and sweetly, and he puts every
genre at his disposal, from blues to swing to free improvisation.
Londons The Wire notes that with expressive
glissandi as opulently sensual as that of Johnny Hodges,
and a knack for flipping innocent melodic utterances into
lines fraught with chancy harmonic and rhythmic ambiguities,
Joness concept is proudly his own. Combining
gospel-inflected soul power with forward-looking expression,
Darius Jones shows clearly the connection between juke joints
and churches of the Deep South. His roof-raising tone and
finely honed musical gifts are currently heard in bands
led by William Hooker, Trevor Dunn, Lewis Barnes, and Mike
Pride. Jones brings a terrific unit to town with Adam Lane
bass and Ryan Sawyer drums.
